ICT Integration in Education: A Case Study of GFP EFL Programs at UoB (Oman)

This study investigates attitudes of teachers and leaners towards ICT integration and highlights the impact of ICT in teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language programmes to the point of developing the English Language Teaching at foundation level. The paper further investigates the challenges that the teachers face in ICT integration in Foundation programme. A case study was designed to find answer to a research question using interview questionnaire. Centre of Foundation Studies Director and 12 English Instructors were interviewed to elicit their beliefs and responses about ICT integration. The results show instructors’ perceptions, leaners’ perceptions, advantages of and barriers to ICT integration, role of teacher training and the impact of ICT for future employability. The paper recommends that pre-service and in-service teacher training sessions are essential to get maximum ICT integration. The findings also suggest that innovative teaching practices leading to professional development can be acquired if the instructors are trained regularly. The results further highlight various doubts of the instructors regarding the short and long term benefits of ICT integration. The research recommends further investigation into the case on regular basis to achieve desired results.

After doing my M.A. English (Literature & Language) in 1996, I started my professional career as a Lecturer in English in Faisalabad, Pakistan. After serving Modern Institute of Technology for 13 years and two months, I relocated to Oman in December 2009 to serve Pakistan School Muscat, Oman. Two years later in February 2012, I joined National Training Institute. Then in February 2014, I started my career as an English Language Instructor at University of Buraimi and am still working here. I am also CELTA certified. I am a PhD in Educational Technology candidate doing research on ICT integration in University EFL teacher Training Program in Oman. I was the Opening Track Speaker at International Conference on Language, Education and Millennium Development Goals (09-11 November, 2011) held at the Twin Towers Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. and my paper was titled, “How Language Can Reduce Poverty.”
