Testing Technical English Skills Online – A Flexible Approach to Ensure Hitting the Nail on the Head

To meet the needs of all stake-holders – employees, employees, colleges, teachers, etc. – a test should display the highest possible degree of flexibility. This particularly applies to Technical English in respect of such questions as: What area of Technology? What are the relevant language and communication skills to be tested? At what level? For what kind of workplace? etc. This workshop will present information on a newly developed innovational online test that gives people working or studying in technical environments the opportunity to find a tailor-made language test to demonstrate their own individual and personal language and communication skills profile – an ideal basis for starting or enhancing a career in any area of technology in today’s increasingly globalised world.

Bio

Forty years of experience in language teaching in further and adult education covering all areas of English language teaching including vocationally oriented classes. For most these years Head of Department and/or Director of Studies. Thirty years of experience in language testing covering all aspects such as curricular development, production of test materials, examiner training and quality control. Now a freelance consultant for many institutions including ministries of education, the German Civil Aviation Authority and for German airlines in the field of language tests for German pilots. Course book author for language learners at all levels. Regular speaker at international conferences.

Online Testing Tools

The aim of this talk is to present various online testing tools that teachers can use to create their own interactive quizzes, puzzles and games for testing student knowledge and measuring student progress. The talk will focus on free user-friendly tools that can be used for testing different language aspects. Attendees will be shown different quiz formats and will learn how to create plausible distractors. The talk will also emphasise the importance of introducing test makers to students and encouraging students to create their own quizzes.

Arjana Blazic is a high school English and German teacher from Zagreb, Croatia. She is an avid user of web 2.0 technologies and a lifelong learner with a strong passion for travel.
