„To text or not to text…“
Watson & Baker published 1984 their studies on how we communicate. Their research showed that we humans communicate 55% by listening, 24% speaking, 13% reading and 8% writing. Has this changed? Today we communicate mostly in text chat via Instant Messenger (Skype, AIM, Yahoo), write short messages on the mobile and tweet. A large amount of communication takes place in forums. A large amount of communication takes place via text chat in virtual worlds such as World of Warcraft, Second Life etc.
So, here is the public debate question: Are teachers hitting the air by teaching speaking skills?
Dr. Doris Molero
Dr. Doris Molero aka Pionia Destiny is EFL university Professor at Rafael Belloso University in Maracaibo, Venezuela. Holds a Masters Degree on Educational Informatics and a Doctoral degree on Sciences of Education specializing in curriculum, and instruction. Her doctoral research was about the use of web 2.0 tools as multiliteracy agents in the EFL class in higher education. She’s a proud member of Webheads in Action. Currently researching how 3d worlds enhance the learning of a Second Language. You can find her in Second Life as Pionia Destiny.EFL Professor that integrate technology in her classes.
Matt has taught English and English for Specific Purposes since 1996 and currently lectures in Legal English at the University of St Gallen, Switzerland. He regularly gives training sessions and presentations in Legal English and Internet in language education, and is secretary of the European Legal English Teachers’ Association. His main research interests are materials development for Legal English and blended learning. His recent publications include Introduction to International Legal English (with Amy Krois- Lindner), the International Legal English online research tasks and a regular Legal English column for Business Spotlight. His teacher’s book for CUP’s Cambridge Academic English course (C1 level) will be published in June 2012.
