If you can read, you can create an app: Coding for English Language Learners (ELL)

English Language Learners (ELL) at a provincial tertiary institution in New Zealand are learning to develop an app, rather than merely using it as consumers of mobile technologies. The English-like language used, namely LiveCode Community Version, also serves another important purpose for the students – learning English.
This short presentation aims to share with the audience that a general interest in coding and programming can be a motivational factor in learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), as it provides a platform for the language learners to take ownership, both in learning EAL and developing a mobile app.

Belma Gaukrodger is an a Education Developer and an English Language Tutor at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) in New Zealand, training staff and students in the use of educational technologies. Her research interests are 3D virtual environments, Social Media for language teaching and learning and mobile technologies.
